The description of Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz must by now be infamous among all Guide fans. Let's recite it together, shall we?
"Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz was not a pleasant sight, even for other Vogons. His highly domed nose rose high above a small piggy forehead. his dark green rubbery skin was thick enough for him to play the game of Vogon Civil Service politics, and play it well..."

Looking at both the TV and Illustrated Guide versions of Jeltz (see below), I was dissatisfied. they weren't...disgusting enough. Jeltz had to be absolutely revolting to lay eyes upon. The BBC TV version was too humanoid, and the illustrated version was not much uglier than a sewer-born Muppet.

My own personal approach to Jeltz was simple enough. I took the 3 things that I thought were the most disgusting: Obesity, bloated frogs and a Tupperware of slime, and threw them in a smelting pot to create a fat, reviling monster.  I have some kind of sick liking for drawing fat-folds in skin so I added a bit of that as well.

I really wanted to play around with Adams' words. There were a few versions of Jeltz on the internet sporting piggy-ears. "Well", I said "it says 'small piggy forehead', not ears". What's a piggy forehead look like anyway? 'Highly domed nose'...that's there. I took the liberty of stretching his nostrils, since Adams didn't really mention where they START from, just where they ended. I think it added a new dimension of ungh-ness to it. The big eyes came from Ford's mention to Arthur that the bug eyed monster "is green, yes." He may have meant it metaphorically, but I think it works pretty well. I gave the skin a rough, wrinkled yet warty texture, and had fun going crazy with the paint application. Finally a coat of gloss tops it off. Normally I don't like having glossy figures, but in this case I think it adds to the reptillian, slimey skin look.

The attire may need some explaning. I was a bit lost as to what a Vogon should wear. I didn't want too much clothing or that would obscure the skin, which I really wanted exposed. I had the idea to yet poke fun at a certain space show once again, which I'm sure is pretty in line with what Adams did anyway. It shouldn't be too hard to guess which other spacecraft commander also wore a yellowish outfit...besides, yellow and green is such a putrid combination.
