Tricia "Trillian" McMillian was another difficult to do character. For one thing, she doesn't really do all that much in the series until the last few books, and isn't featured all that prominantly in the radio or TV productions. Speaking of which....

Trillian on the BBC show.

Urgh!! Apologies to the actress, but she looks like a space prostitute! I've always imagined Trillian to have a bit more class...or at least have better taste in clothes. plus, if I remember correctly, the TV actress had a most horrendous Minnie-Mouse squeaky voice.

Verdict: I'm just going to disregard this version completely.

There was a much nicer Trillian in the Illustrated Guide, which followed Adams' description better. It goes as follows,

"She was a slim, darkish, humanoid, with long waves of black hair, a full mouth, an odd little nob of a nose and ridiculously brown eyes. With her red headscarf knotted in that particular way and her long flowing silky brown dress she looked vaguely Arabic."

Initial Trillian rough sketch. I thought I might forego the scarf & dress version for the sexier Mostly Harmless Rymplon version, but I thankfully gave up that idea.

This was much closer to what I was hoping for, but it still seemed to lack something, apart from the red scarf.

Searches on the internet revealed that at some point in time, Adams had compiled a list of who he'd like to see play the various Hitchhiker characters, and the name Amanda Donahue came up as a potential Trillian.

Now someone like HER I would believe would get hit on by both Arthur and Zaphod! Thus I decided to amalgamate the look of both the Illustrated guide Trillian and Amanda. A dark, exotic look in accordance to Adams' description.

Reworked Trillian design, incorporating the scarf and dress. Alright, it's not QUITE a dress.

The Star Trek Seska figure I used as a base had a face that could be repainted to look like a generic good-looking female, which was a start. I concentrated on giving her some distinct features, such as thicker eyebrows (a la Donahue), as well as the nob of a nose by sandpapering and carving away quite a bit of the existing Seska nose.

The scarf and dress were especially difficult to imagine. My personal preference is skin-tight. wink wink. Well, compromise, compromise. I gave her a half-dress that had an open front so her leg joints would still retain some usefulness, whatever little there was. I wanted to have a brownish scheme throughout as well. I really wasn't sure about this one, so I experimented with some markers before I decided on variants of brown for more coherence.

The thing I had the most fun with was the scarf. I decided to go for "Arabic-inspired" rather than pure out Arabic patterns. The impression would be good enough. It was pretty challenging trying to get the ribbon to conform to the head to look like cloth, but lots of super-glue later I think I did quite a good job, if I do say so myself.
